Carpet Cleaning Haringey Health and Safety Policy

Carpet Cleaning Haringey is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks that arise from our professional carpet, upholstery and soft furnishing cleaning services across homes and commercial premises.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and property damage arising from our activities. We aim to create a working environment where health and safety is an integral part of all planning and operations, and where every member of our team takes personal responsibility for safe working practices.

Management will provide appropriate resources, information, instruction, supervision and training to ensure that this policy is implemented and maintained. We review this policy regularly to reflect changes in legislation, industry guidance, work methods and technology.

Responsibilities

The company management has overall responsibility for health and safety. This includes establishing procedures, allocating duties, and ensuring that safety measures are in place and effective.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day to day implementation of this policy, including carrying out risk assessments, monitoring safe working practices on site and ensuring that staff follow the agreed procedures.

All employees, contractors and temporary workers have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must follow training and instructions, use the provided equipment correctly, report hazards, near misses and incidents promptly, and co operate with management to achieve safe working conditions.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We assess the risks associated with all cleaning activities prior to commencing work. This includes the use of cleaning chemicals, machinery and equipment, manual handling tasks, working in client premises, and any additional site specific hazards such as stairs, restricted access or public areas.

Based on the findings of these assessments, we implement safe systems of work. These may include specific methods for handling and diluting chemicals, procedures for setting up and operating carpet cleaning machines, controls on trailing hoses and electrical leads, and arrangements to segregate work areas from residents, employees or visitors where necessary.

Chemical Safety and Hazardous Substances

We only use professional cleaning solutions supplied with appropriate safety data information. All hazardous substances are assessed before use, and control measures are put in place to minimise exposure, including correct dilution, ventilation, storage and disposal.

Staff receive instruction on the safe handling of chemicals, the meaning of hazard symbols, and the importance of using the correct personal protective equipment. Chemicals are kept in clearly labelled containers, stored securely when not in use, and never left unattended in areas accessible to children, pets or the public.

Equipment, Electrical Safety and Maintenance

All carpet cleaning machines, vacuums, extractors and other equipment are selected for their suitability and safety features. Equipment is inspected routinely and maintained in good working order in line with manufacturer guidance.

Electrical safety is a key priority. Cables are routed to avoid trip hazards and contact with water, and equipment is not used if there is any visible damage or defect. Only trained personnel are permitted to operate powered machinery. Any defective item is withdrawn from use immediately and reported for repair or replacement.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, personal protective equipment is provided and must be used. This may include protective gloves, footwear, masks or eye protection, depending on the task and products in use.

Employees are trained in the correct selection, use and care of personal protective equipment. Items are replaced when worn or damaged, and are kept clean and ready for use. Failure to wear required protective equipment is treated as a serious breach of health and safety rules.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Many carpet cleaning tasks involve moving equipment, furniture and hoses. We are committed to reducing the risk of strain and musculoskeletal injuries through safe manual handling practices.

Staff receive guidance and, where appropriate, formal training on correct lifting techniques, team lifting, use of trolleys and other aids, and planning of routes to avoid unnecessary carrying. Heavy or awkward items are not moved without suitable assistance or equipment.

Protection of Clients, Visitors and the Public

Our teams work with care and consideration in all properties. We take steps to minimise disruption, noise and obstruction, and to protect clients, their staff, residents and visitors from harm.

Work areas are clearly identified, and where possible, isolated from regular traffic. Warning signs may be used to highlight wet floors, equipment and trip hazards. Hoses and cables are positioned carefully, and we maintain good housekeeping, keeping the work area tidy and promptly cleaning any spills.

Incident Reporting, Emergencies and First Aid

All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous occurrences must be reported immediately to management. This allows us to investigate, identify causes and put corrective measures in place to prevent recurrence.

Our teams are briefed on emergency procedures relevant to the environments in which they work, including fire safety arrangements, evacuation routes and assembly points where applicable. At least one team member on site will have access to basic first aid provisions and will know how to contact emergency services when required.

Training, Supervision and Communication

Health and safety training is provided as part of induction and updated as needed. Topics include safe use of equipment, chemical handling, manual handling, personal protective equipment and client property protection. Additional task specific instruction is given before new equipment or products are introduced.

Supervision levels are appropriate to the experience and competence of staff. We encourage open communication about safety concerns and welcome suggestions for improvements from all members of the team and from clients.

Policy Review and Continuous Improvement

This health and safety policy is reviewed on a regular basis and whenever there are significant changes to our services, working methods or applicable legislation. Updates are communicated to all staff, and new procedures are incorporated into training and day to day operations.

By following this policy, Carpet Cleaning Haringey aims to deliver high quality cleaning services while protecting the health, safety and welfare of everyone affected by our work.
